Lets Get it Started… Yoga

Want to try yoga? Cool! Now what kind of class do you want? Ashtanga, sivananda, yin, jivamutki, dru, viyasa flow? These words may sound like ‘blah, blah, blaaaaaaaaah’ to you and that’s absolutely fine! Usually it takes trying a lot of different styles and teachers to find the class for you and more often than not students follow teachers rather than a particular style. Also your first yoga class can be mega intimidating especially if the teacher is speaking in Sanskrit. Now fear not wannabe yogi! The answer is here!

Try a beginners course at We are Wellness ( with me, obvs) the 4 week course is designed to be a completely comprehensive introduction to yoga so by the end you can confidently jump into any class or even begin a home practice! I’ll warn you now I don’t speak Sanskrit, just English and the odd gobbledegook rambles with a sprinkling of crazy and sometimes I can’t get my right and left correct, happens to us all right? Anyhoo here’s a little overview of what to expect:

Each week is designed so that a new topic is covered (with a little refresher of the previous week) that builds your understanding and abilities in the right order. We will focus on adjustments and correct alignment of poses.

Week 1: Breathing (ujjai breath maybe alternate nostril breathing) & sun salutation A & B.
Breathing is an important part of yoga and is a great place to start. The sun salutations are the way we build heat in the body in the start of yoga classes (and throughout) and will be something you can easily remember and immediately start doing at home!
Week 2: Standing postures and balance.
After we’ve warmed up with sun salutations we move onto the standing postures that form the start of most yoga classes as they are great for building strength and determination. The balances will help you work on deeper strength and your focus.
Week 3: Forward folds and twists.
This session will start by ensuring the body is nice and warm by recapping the following weeks and will then focus on the spine and hips going safely into forward folds and releasing with twists.
Week 4: Back bends and relaxation.
In this final session after warming up with what we’ve learnt over the past weeks we will explore back bends and how to make them feel great! These can often be quite energising, so we end with a well deserved guided relaxation.
